So I am a little excited and scared today. Over the past few weeks I have been working on my MIT site and it's now to share what I have done so far.
I would really like some feedback on this. I know that it is not complete but the more I work on it the better I feel about it.
Take a look and let me know.

Hi Marc and Kereru team,
ReplyDeleteHave looked through your 'Kereru Maths' site. A huge amount of work to put together the resources in your workshop slides. Well done.
I think the workshops should provide excellent rewindable learning to back up and support initial new learning with a teacher.
With the weekly problem solving problems, I see the children have tried various strategies to solve the problems. Some worked. Some did not. Good to see students having a go and being prepared to take risks even when the problem stretched them. How do you visit these problems so the children see useful strategies used?
I am sure that, over time this resource will complement your learning space work and be an excellent tool for home to link into and better understand what their children are learning.

Hi Gill
DeleteThanks for your comment - it has been a busy year building up this resource.
Yes the workshops are great for rewindable learning plus some learners go thru the content before signing up to make sure that they have an initial understanding of the required knowledge.
As for the problem solving activities we spend a good amount of time unpacking the problem and brainstorming different strategies that could be used. Normally from the knowledge that the learners have. Once the learners are part of their smaller problem solving group they discuss the pros and cons of each individual strategy and as a group (no more than 4) decide on the best one to work on. After the learners have created their DLO they then share this back to the group where Feedback and Feedforward take place. We structure this using the maths talk moves which give learners a sentence starter to follow. This then helps learners to progress their goals and gives them a new focus. I personally have found that the learners feedback/ feedforward is more powerful than that of the teachers ones.
Kia Ora Marc!
ReplyDeleteI've just checked out your link to Kēreru Maths Site, I found that it was really easy to use and to navigate when the links, slides and top navigation bar and I really like that you have used 'snapshot' photos of Maths in action, it gives off the vibe that Maths in Kēreru is really engaging and at the end of the day... that's what we want!!
What types of programmes or DLO's do you use for the students to create learning/share learning and/or showcase? I know that you use ipads, would be interested to know what ideas you had for this.
I see that you have added in the whānau tab and currently there isn't anything in there, is this a new idea that you have had? what do you think you will put in there for whānau that is different from learning at home?
Lots to take from your site! Well done
Kia ora Marc,
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you have organised this site so that I can see how you are teaching math in your space. It looks like you are making the learning really authentic to your learners by picking questions that they can relate to. I really love the true and false math questions. I also like that you have shared around mixed ability grouping and not putting a lid on the learning opportunities.
In terms of the functionality of the Site, in my head this looks like what would be share on your class site. I wonder what the main purpose of this Site is? Is it a tool for teachers? A tool for learners? A tool for parents? I feel like it touches all audiences but doesn't have a clear function (if that makes sense).
I really appreciate all the work that has gone on for your learners and your space around math. The programme that you are running looks really engaging and I can see huge value in the way you are teaching. I guess the main question I have when looking at this tool is does it fit the brief of creating a resource to support other teachers? How would they go about getting your ideas? Would they have to make things from scratch? And if so, how is this different to having a really effective Learning Site for your Hub?
Just my two cents,
Happy to help in any way I can.
- Kelsey
Kia ora Mark,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of hard work has gone into your Math Site. I loved seeing the pictures of the class and the different working areas. It is a wonderful way to bring people into your classroom.
I spent a bit of time exploring the site, once I had found where to go, as the toolbar at the top is quite small and it took me a few seconds to see it.
I agree with Kelsey around the questions around who it is for. I know it is hard with having younger students to strike the balance between informing adults and giving students access to their work. I wonder if it needs to be simplified a little or just organised slightly differently with adult stuff towards the end of the bar. Just an idea.
I thought it was great having a place for your students to put their work. How are you doing this?
I think overall you have a great site, with lots of things for the students to access. I can use my teacher knowledge to work out how your programme works, though I probably would have a few questions if I was wanting to implement this in my class as the flow of the lesson/week isn't really clear but I get the idea. The home page was fantastic!
Thanks for being brave and asking for feedback.
